Let us build our ground well so we do not regret our actions in the future Joe Smith was a loyal carpenter who worked nearly two decades for a very successful contractor. The contractor called him in his office one day and said, "Joe, I'm putting you in charge of the next house we build. I want you to order all the materials and oversee the job from the ground up." Joe accepted the assignment with great enthusiasm. He studied the blueprints, checked every measurement and specification. Suddenly, he had a thought, If I am really in charge, why couldn't I cut a few corners, use less expensive materials, and put the extra money in my pocket? Who will know? Once the house is painted, it will look great. So Joe set about his scheme. He ordered second-grade lumber and inexpensive concrete, put in cheap wiring, and cut every corner he could. When the house was finished, the contractor came to see it. "What a fine job you have done." he said. "You have been such a faithful carpenter to me all these years that I have decided to show you my gratitude by giving to you as a gift this very house which you have built." Build well today. 很久以前，在以色列發生了以下一段故事：有一天當政府人員在翻新穀倉時，發現牆角有一個老鼠洞，於是眾人用煙燻的方式，希望逼使裡面的老鼠出來。待了一會，果然看到老鼠一隻隻地逃竄出來。
眾人正忖度老鼠大概已經逃光了，可以上前打掃之際，卻見還有兩隻老鼠在洞口處推擠，經過一番努力，雙雙才逃出來。但很奇怪的是，兩隻老鼠出了洞口以後，卻不立時逃走，而是在洞口附近互相追趕，像是要咬對方的尾巴似的。
眾人都很納悶，便走上前去細看，這才發現原來其中一隻老鼠瞎眼看不見，而另一隻正設法使對方咬著自己的尾巴，然後帶領同伴一起逃走。
眾人見狀，都默然不語，陷入沉思中。吃飯的時候，眾人又圍著坐下，並開始討論剛才的兩隻老鼠。
嚴肅的羅馬官長說：「我認為剛才的兩隻老鼠是君臣主僕的關係。」眾人思考一會後說：「原來如此！」於是羅馬官兵擺出一副高傲的模樣。
聰明的以色列人說：「我認為剛才的兩隻老鼠是夫婦關係。」眾人又思考了一會，覺得不錯，連聲稱是。於是以色列人露出一副飄飄然得意的嘴臉。
強調孝義的中國人說：「我認為剛才的兩隻老鼠是母子關係。」眾人又思考了一會，更覺合理，又連聲稱是。於是中國人的臉上立時堆滿了專業的謙虛。
此時，單純的撒瑪利亞人蹲在地上托著下巴，呆呆地望著眾人，問道：「為什麼兩隻老鼠一定要有什麼關係呢？」
空氣在剎那之間凝固了，眾人呆呆地望著這個撒瑪利亞人，不發一語。先前說話的羅馬官長、以色列人和中國人都面露慚色地低下頭不敢作聲。事實上，真正的愛並非建基於利益、情義或血緣的關係上，而是建基於「沒有任何關係」上。  |
